Preserving Indigenous Maritime History and Heritage
We are a community-based organisation focused on preserving, restoring and promoting the maritime history and heritage of the Indigenous people of Cape York, Torres Strait and the South Pacific region. The Pearl Lugger Heritage Fleet focusses specifically on historic Torres Strait pearling luggers, shell carriers and missionary vessels including their acquisition, preservation, restoration and return to services in tourism, environment, education and cultural activities.
Are you passionate about preserving Indigenous maritime history? Would you like to experience Indigenous maritime heritage of pearling luggers in Torres Strait and Cape York? Get involved as crew, volunteers, students, shipwrights and educators. We'd love to have you join the team and our pearling luggers in Cairns!
Whether you help through monetary donations, volunteering your time, or spreading our mission through word-of-mouth, thank you. To date we have rescued and commenced restoration of four historic luggers with the aim for a further three. We are also looking to acquire other vessels connected to our goals.
